Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) are intended for gifted students, predominantly from rural areas in India, who lack access to accelerated learning due to financial, social, and rural disadvantages. JNVs are fully residential and co-educational schools affiliated with CBSE, with classes from VI to XII. The medium of instruction is Hindi or English. JNVs are administered by “Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti,”, an autonomous organization under the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education (MoE).
The idea of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya was conceived by the former Prime Minister of India, Late Rajiv Gandhi. The concept of opening a JNV in every district of India was born as a part of the National Policy on Education, 1986, to provide excellence and social justice.
The JNV life starts for every student with a daily routine, designed to develop punctuality, discipline, and confidence. Social life and mutual fellowship, with involvement in socially useful productive works (SUPW) and physical health activities aid in maturing oneself with empathy, ethics, honesty, loyalty and moral values. The overall curriculum of JNV aims at building responsible citizens and professionally competent personnel, contributing to nation-building. As years pass by, students get promoted to higher standards with higher responsibilities.
This thorough process of nurturing a student from a tender age to adulthood is worth observing. Since JNV is a residential co-educational school, students stay in 24-bed dormitories, named as Nilgiri (Green) House, Aravali (Blue) House, Shivalik (Red) House and Udaigiri (Yellow) House. The life in hostel starts at a tender age, allowing one to build self-reliance. There are also provisions for migration and mini-migration of students within and out of the state for better exposure. JNV has inculcated us with improvised habits for life to remain fit and healthy. Day starts by getting up early in the morning, followed by a run and exercise. Amenities for sports and recreational activities are available and accessible to everyone on campus, with a high emphasis on playing games such as football, cricket, basketball, kho-kho, handball, volleyball etc.; and athletics provides a base for being a professional sportsman. Moreover, indoor games such as carrom, chess, table tennis, etc are equally prioritized. Annual Sports and Cultural Week is observed every year to encourage competitive engagement in sports and cultural activities. Sports weeks are also organized among different JNVs at Regional and National levels, and achievements are awarded, which are cherished for life.

A Glorious Beginning:
JNV Lakhimpur marked its existence in the year 1997, with first intake batch comprising 80 students as a part of the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Scheme. The Vidyalaya commenced its journey with a noble vision – to identify and nurture the talents of students from rural and underprivileged backgrounds. Inception of the school, marked the dawn of a new era of quality education in the region. The first four batches of JNV, Lakhimpur had the privilege to enjoy its very nascent phase near Bihpuria Block office, which is informally addressed as “Temporary site”. After four years in temporary site, the school was shifted to its permanent campus at Chaudhapunia village, near Bihpuria town of Lakhimpur district, Assam; where we celebrate 25 glorious years of its existence and excellence.
